Carl Rogers (1902-1987)

Influential American psychologist and among the founders of the humanistic approach to psychology and person-centered therapy, his own unique approach to understanding personality and human relationships.

Co-operation

Can be defined as an exchange in which the participants benefit from the encounter (Richard Sennett).

Cynical performance

The performer may not be taken in by his own routine. The individual has no belief in his own act and no ultimate concern with the beliefs of his audience (Erving Goffman).

Dramaturgy (Sociology)

When we are born, we are thrust onto the stage of everyday life, and our socialisation consists of learning how to play our assigned roles from other people. We enact our roles in the company of others, who are in turn enacting their roles in interaction with us. Whatever we do, we are playing out some role on the stage of life (Erving Goffman).

Empathy Theory

The theory states that the observer knows what the subject is feeling, because he/she imagines him/herself in similar circumstances and react accordingly.

Encounter Group

Planned intensive group experience ran by a facilitator. Also known as T-groups. Individuals come into close contact and communicate freely with each other. “Laboratories in human relationships” (Carl Rogers).

Erving Goffman (1922-1983)

Canadian-American sociologist. Goffman made substantial advances in the study of
face-to-face interaction, elaborated the "dramaturgical approach" to human interaction, and developed numerous concepts that have had a massive influence, particularly in the field of the micro-sociology of everyday life.

Event

A sudden rupture from the repetition of the same at the right time and the right place. It must not fall within the possibilities we are working with (Alan Badiou).

Expanded Cinema

Expanded Cinema is a film and video practice which activates the live context of watching, transforming cinema's historical and cultural ‘architectures of reception' into sites of cinematic experience that are heterogeneous, performative and non-determined. more

Experience Economy

Marketing strategy that seeks to replace goods and services with scripted and staged personal experiences (Claire Bishop).

Fluxus Scores

The art forms most closely associated with Fluxus. The term "score" is used in exactly the sense that one uses the term to describe a music score: a series of notes that allow anyone to perform the work. Instructions on how to perform a particular action/event.

Gesture

Movement of the body revealing a psychological state or designed to express an idea.

Happenings

Involved more than the detached observation of the viewer; the artist engaged with Happenings required the viewer to actively participate in each piece. more

Humanistic Psychology

Humanism is a psychological perspective that emphasizes the study of the whole person. Humanistic psychologists look at human behaviour not only through the eyes of the observer, but through the eyes of the person doing the behaving. This approach emphasizes individuals' inherent drive towards self-actualization, the process of realizing and expressing one's own capabilities and creativity.
